This course will acquaint operators in the water environment field with the basic wastewater treatment processes. The material will cover the different steps involved in a typical wastewater treatment plant. This will include areas such as primary, secondary (activated sludge) treatment and sludge processing. In order to gain a better understanding of these processes, sample mathematical problems will be used to explain each step. Basic mathematical computations such as rounding, significant figures and mean will be explained. In addition, problems involving simple laboratory procedures will also be discussed (Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Chemical Oxygen Demand, suspended solids, etc.). Each problem will be solved in a step by step fashion in order to better understand the math and the units involved.
